Post-weaning diarrhoea in piglets - preventive strategies in the suckling period
Post weaning diarrhoea (PWD) is considered one of the major welfare and production problems at weaning in Denmark. The objective of the project is to improve production, health and welfare of the weaned piglets while at the same time reducing the use of drugs. Furthermore, the objective of the project is to increase the fundamental knowledge on how to improve the robustness of weaned piglets to changes in nutrition, environment, and infection pressure. This includes studies on:
- Diversity, population dynamics and function of a protective microbiota in relation to the developmental stage of the piglets, including the frequency of E. coli and the incidences of PWD
- Maturing processes of the behavioural and physiological systems involved in protection against PWD at weaning in relation to nutritional and environmental factors
- Field tests of practically applicable strategies for preparing the piglets to weaning during the suckling period and immediately after weaning
